The TOEFL writing section: tasks and scoring

It has 12 items in about 23 minutes: 10 Build a Sentence items, one email and one academic discussion post. The integrated writing task, where you read, listened and then wrote, isn't part of the TOEFL writing section any more. The two longer tasks are scored by AI.

What's in the TOEFL writing section?

ETS says its AI scoring looks at features like fluency, coherence and grammar.

What happened to TOEFL integrated writing?

It was part of the test before January 21, 2026. ETS's 2023 score data summary describes the old Writing section as two tasks, including one where you read a passage, heard a short lecture and wrote in response. ETS's 2026 blueprint lists only Build a Sentence, Write an Email and Write for an Academic Discussion. Integrated writing examples and templates from older books won't match today's test.

Writing prompts: what to expect

Prompts can give you an audience, a purpose or a situation, and your tone should fit it: informal or semi-formal for everyday messages, formal for academic writing. At higher levels, ETS looks for logical organization, ideas backed up with details, and precise words. Practice typing a full answer in a few minutes, then check grammar and linking words.
