What the audio is like
Recordings range from a few words to talks of up to 250 words, at a natural pace. ETS uses AI-generated audio and sometimes human voice actors, with a balance of accents such as US and Canadian, Australian and British English. A picture of the speaker appears with each recording, and you answer printed multiple-choice questions after it.
Listening is two-stage adaptive. ETS's blueprint gives the first part 18 minutes and the second 7 minutes (easier) or 11 minutes (harder). Each scored item is worth 1 point.
