TOEFL ITP, TOEFL Junior and other TOEFL tests

TOEFL ITP is a test that schools and programs give themselves, for people aged 16 and up, used for placement, progress checks and some admissions. ETS also makes TOEFL Junior for younger students, and lists TOEFL Primary and TOEFL Essentials among its TOEFL tests.

What is TOEFL ITP?

The TOEFL ITP Assessment Series has Level 1 and Level 2 tests of listening comprehension, reading comprehension, and structure and written expression, plus a separate TOEFL ITP Speaking Test. ETS says more than 2,500 institutions in over 50 countries give it each year.

ETS lists its uses as placement, tracking progress, and admission to short-term or non-degree programs, joint international degree programs, or an institution's own programs. ETS says it isn't a replacement for the TOEFL iBT. If you've been told to take TOEFL ITP, your school arranges it and tells you how.

TOEFL Junior and TOEFL iBT Australia

TOEFL Junior tests are for students aged 11 and up and belong to ETS's TOEFL Young Students series, used for placement and tracking progress.

TOEFL iBT Australia is a separate version. ETS's bulletin says its scores reach your ETS account about 4 to 8 days after the test, and that only TOEFL iBT Australia and TOEFL iBT tests taken before January 21, 2026 are currently approved for Australian visas.

Older TOEFL tests: paper-based and computer-based

ETS's 2023 score data summary sets out the history. The computer-based TOEFL (CBT) started in 1998 and its last test was in September 2006, after the internet-based TOEFL iBT arrived in 2005. The revised paper-delivered test was discontinued in 2021.

ETS doesn't publish a conversion from old paper-based scores to the 1 to 6 scale. For an old paper-based score such as 550, ask your school what it accepts; ETS won't report any TOEFL score more than 2 years old.
