How to get a Georgia motorcycle license

There are two routes. Pass the Basic RiderCourse and its 90-day waiver skips the license tests at DDS. Or get a Class MP permit with a vision and knowledge exam, then pass the on-cycle skills test on your own motorcycle. Both end with a Georgia motorcycle license in Class M, issued by the Department of Driver Services.

Getting the Class MP permit

  1. Fill in the License/ID/Permit form online. DDS keeps it on file for 60 days.
  2. Bring one identity document, two proofs of Georgia address from different sources, and your Social Security number. Documents must be in English.
  3. Under 18, also bring an ADAP certificate, proof of school enrollment, a Joshua’s Law driver training certificate and an adult to sign.
  4. At a Customer Service Center, pass the vision and motorcycle knowledge exams, have your photo taken and pay the fee.

How do you get a Georgia motorcycle license after the permit?

Book the on-cycle skills test once you hold the MP; only permit holders can reserve one. Bring your own motorcycle. Your knowledge exam score lasts one year, so if you don’t pass the skills test in that time, you take the knowledge exam again.

Or take the Basic RiderCourse. Passing it gives a 90-day waiver of the knowledge and skills tests at a DDS center.

Mopeds and three-wheelers in Georgia

DDS classes motor tricycles with motorcycles under Class M. Mopeds with an engine of 50cc or less aren’t covered by its motorcycle definition.
