Getting a motorcycle license in Texas

Start with a course. Every applicant for a motorcycle license in Texas finishes one approved by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, and it lets DPS waive the knowledge test. Then you book a DPS appointment with your certificate and form DL-14A. Adults with a full Texas license can skip the skills test too; everyone under 18 takes it.

How do you get a motorcycle license in Texas?

  1. Finish a TDLR-approved motorcycle course. The MSB-8 or MSB-8R certificate is valid for 24 months.
  2. Book a DPS driver license appointment.
  3. Bring form DL-14A, your course certificate, REAL ID documents and the fee. DPS takes your photo and fingerprints.
  4. If you don’t hold a current Texas license, bring an Impact Texas Drivers (ITD) certificate too.
  5. Take the skills test if you need one.

Who has to take the skills test

All minors do. Adults do too unless they hold a valid, unrestricted Texas Class A, B or C license and finished the course, or are transferring an unrestricted motorcycle license from another state or a Canadian province. You bring the motorcycle and a car with a licensed driver to follow you.

Riders under 18

  • A parent or legal guardian comes with you.
  • Proof of the 32-hour classroom part of driver education (DE-964 or DEE-964).
  • A high school diploma or equivalent, or a Verification of Enrollment and Attendance (VOE) form.
  • A learner license first. You practice under a licensed rider 21 or older until you pass the skills test.
