How to get a motorcycle license

The usual path is to study the manual, pass a knowledge and vision test for a permit, practice within its limits, then pass a riding test or an approved course. But each state sets its own steps: Texas makes everyone take a course first, while California skips the permit for riders 21 and over. Here’s how to get a motorcycle license in four states, with links for the rest.

Steps to get a motorcycle license

  1. Find your state’s motorcycle page and manual. Check whether you need a course before the permit.
  2. Gather your documents: identity, residence and, under 18, a parent or guardian.
  3. Pass the vision and knowledge tests to get your permit.
  4. Practice within the permit’s restrictions.
  5. Pass the riding test, or finish an approved course that waives it.
  6. Pay the fee and get the license or endorsement added.

How to get a motorcycle license in your state

We’ve written the steps out in full for four states. For the others, our by-state page has what each state’s official page says, or links to that state’s own page on this site.

Can you get a motorcycle license without a driver’s license?

In some states. California and Texas issue motorcycle-only licenses. California gives an extra observation road test to applicants who have never been licensed. In New York, without another New York license you must finish a pre-licensing course or driver education before you can book the road test.

How long does it take?

It can be a few weeks or several months. California makes riders under 21 hold the permit for 6 months, and New York makes riders under 18 wait 6 months before the road test. New York’s road test dates are usually 3 to 5 weeks out. Riders 21 and over in California can skip the permit and go straight to a course or the DMV riding test.
