Theory test age and the steps before it
| Age | What you can do |
|---|---|
| 15 years 9 months | Apply for your provisional driving licence |
| 16 | Take the car theory test, only if you get or have applied for the higher rate of PIP mobility |
| 17 | Take the car theory test, and most people can start driving lessons |
Can you take your theory test at 16?
Only if you get, or have applied for, the higher rate of the mobility part of PIP. Everyone else waits until their 17th birthday. You can apply for your provisional licence from 15 years and 9 months, so it can be ready in time.
Getting your provisional licence
It costs £34 online or £43 by post. If you apply online it should arrive within a week. You’ll need to be able to read a number plate from 20 metres, and to have permission to live in Great Britain for at least 185 days.
Is there an upper age limit for the theory test?
GOV.UK doesn’t set an upper age limit for the theory test. If you already drive, you don’t have to retake your test at 70. You do have to renew your licence at 70 and then every 3 years, and that’s free online.
Plan around the 2-year window
A theory pass lasts 2 years. If you pass at 17 and don’t take your practical test until after it expires, you’ll need to sit the theory test again. So it’s worth taking the theory test when you’re close to being ready for the road.
