United Kingdom · Theory test

Can you take the theory test online?

No. You can’t take the theory test online at home. You sit it on a computer at a theory test centre. Nearly everything around it happens online, though: booking, changing your date, practising, and finding your pass certificate number.

What you can do online before your theory test

  • Book the test on GOV.UK for £23
  • Check or change your appointment
  • Take DVSA’s free practice multiple-choice test
  • Try 3 free hazard perception clips from DVSA
  • Find a lost theory test pass certificate number

Free practice from DVSA

DVSA’s practice questions aren’t used in the real test, but they cover the same topics. There are free mock tests for cars, motorcycles, lorries and buses.

Your pass certificate online

Lost your certificate? For a car driving test you don’t need a new one, because the examiner checks you’ve passed before the test starts. If you’re asked for the number, GOV.UK can email it to you.

Is a free online theory test the real thing?

No. Some websites call their practice quizzes an online theory test, but they’re only practice. The only real test is the one you book through GOV.UK and take at a test centre.
