What’s the theory test pass mark for each part?
| Part | What you do | Pass mark |
|---|---|---|
| Multiple choice | 50 questions in 57 minutes, 3 of them about a short video | 43 out of 50 |
| Hazard perception | 14 video clips, click when you spot a developing hazard | 44 out of 75 |
You book and take both parts together. There’s a break of up to 3 minutes between them if you want it.
How the hazard perception score works
There are 15 developing hazards across the 14 clips, each worth up to 5 points, and the sooner you click the more you score.
Pass one part, fail the other?
Then you’ve failed the test. You get a letter at the test centre showing which parts you didn’t score enough on, but you have to book and take the whole test again. Passing one part doesn’t carry over.
How many people reach the pass mark?
Fewer than half. DVSA’s figures show 44.8% of car theory tests were passed in the year April 2025 to March 2026.
Is the practical driving test marked the same way?
No. The practical test is marked on faults, not points. You pass with no more than 15 driving faults, often called minors, and no serious or dangerous faults.
