Your theory test certificate and pass number

When you pass, you get a letter at the test centre with your theory test certificate number, often called your pass number. It lasts 2 years. If you don’t pass your driving test in that time, you have to take the theory test again.

When does a theory test certificate expire?

2 years after you pass. New driving test dates come out 24 weeks ahead, so don’t leave booking your driving test until the last few months.

Lost your theory test certificate?

For a car driving test you don’t need a replacement. The examiner checks you’ve passed before the test starts, and you usually don’t need the number to book.

If you are asked for it, GOV.UK’s Find your theory test pass certificate number service emails it to the address you booked with. You need your driving licence and the booking reference from your theory test booking email, and the service can look up your booking details if you’ve lost that.

Your result on the day

You get your result at the test centre straight after the test. If you fail, the letter shows which parts you didn’t score enough on, and you can retake the test after 3 working days.

Passed in Northern Ireland?

If you passed the theory test in Northern Ireland and you’re taking your driving test in Great Britain, take your theory test certificate with you.
