What do you need to bring to your theory test?

Bring your UK photocard driving licence. It’s the one thing you need to bring to your theory test. If you’ve got an old paper licence, bring a valid passport with it. Without the right ID your test is cancelled and you won’t get your money back.

Checklist: what you need to bring to your theory test

  • Your UK photocard driving licence (your provisional licence is fine)
  • A valid passport too, if you have a paper licence
  • Both the photocard and paper counterpart, if your licence is from Northern Ireland
  • Proof of a name change, like a marriage certificate or deed poll, if your name doesn’t match the booking
  • Your glasses or contact lenses, if you need them

Do you need to bring a pen to your theory test?

No. The whole test is on a computer. Pens, phones, watches, wallets, coats, hats and small bags all go in a locker before you go in. If there are no lockers, they go in a clear plastic box that staff look after. Large bags aren’t allowed, so travel light.

Lost your licence?

Apply for a replacement straight away. It can take up to 15 days to arrive. If it won’t come in time, change your test date, and do it at least 3 full working days before so you don’t lose the fee.

What happens when you arrive

Get there at least 15 minutes early. If you’re late, the test is cancelled and you lose your money.

Staff check your face against your licence photo, and you’ll go through security checks such as turning out your pockets and showing your ears for hidden earpieces. Switch off every device before you go in. There’s no waiting area for anyone who comes with you.
