Is there a waiting list for driving test cancellations?
No. DVSA doesn’t keep a waiting list or a cancellation list. Book the best date you can get, then keep checking the GOV.UK service and move your test if an earlier slot comes up. Slots can appear at any time of the week.
Moving to an earlier date uses a change
Since 31 March 2026 you get 2 changes to a car driving test booking. A change of date, time or centre counts as one. From 9 June 2026 you can only move your test to one of the 3 centres nearest to where it’s booked, or back to the centre you first booked. So only book at a centre you mean to use.
Cancellation finder apps aren’t allowed
From 12 May 2026, using an unofficial service to search the booking system for appointments isn’t allowed, and that includes cancellation finder websites and apps. DVSA monitors the service and can suspend your online access or cancel your booking.
Only you can book or change your car test now, not your instructor, and it’s against the law for anyone else to book one for you. You can report resellers and cancellation finders to DVSA on GOV.UK.
Driving test waiting times
In September 2026 the median wait between booking a car driving test and taking it was 11.6 weeks across Great Britain, so half of learners waited longer than that. 29.5% of the tests taken that month were booked more than 21 weeks earlier. These are DVSA’s own figures, published on 14 October 2026.
DVSA doesn’t publish waiting times for theory tests. Its theory test tables only cover how many tests were taken and passed, so the quickest way to see your wait is to look at dates in the GOV.UK booking service.
