Theory test revision planner

Tell the planner when your test is and it turns your theory test revision into one short lesson a day. All 36 lessons are in there, from stopping distances to first aid at an incident, and the last two days are kept for a full practice test and your weakest topic.

How long should you spend on theory test revision?

DVSA doesn’t set a number of hours, and it varies a lot from person to person. A better test is your scores: you’re ready when you pass practice tests every time, not just now and then, and you can do the same with hazard clips.

As a guide, the planner’s 36 lessons take just over 5 weeks at one a day. If your test is sooner, it doubles up. If it’s further away, it spreads the lessons out, so your theory test revision doesn’t peak too early.

What to revise first

Start with the Highway Code. DVSA says the multiple-choice questions are based on it, Know Your Traffic Signs and Driving - the essential skills, and the first two are free on GOV.UK. Leave time for hazard perception too: it’s scored separately, and books won’t teach it.

Your pass lasts 2 years, so there’s no rush to sit the test. Many learners time it for when their driving lessons are going well.
