Is the theory test centre the same as the driving test centre?
No. The theory test is taken on a computer at a theory test centre. The practical driving test starts from a driving test centre, which GOV.UK lists in a separate finder. So don’t assume the place you passed your theory is where you’ll take your driving test.
Picking and changing your centre
When you book on GOV.UK you choose a centre, then a date and time. If more than one centre is in reach, compare the dates at each before you pay, because one may have a slot weeks earlier. You can move your theory test to another centre later, free, if you give at least 3 full working days’ notice.
Before you set off
- Check the centre’s special instructions in the GOV.UK finder, such as where to go in the building
- Get there at least 15 minutes early. If you’re late, you can’t sit the test and you lose the £23
- Bring your photocard licence. Phones and bags go in a locker
- There’s no waiting area for anyone who comes with you
Northern Ireland
Theory test centres in Northern Ireland are listed on nidirect, not GOV.UK, and you book them through the DVA.
