Georgia learner's permit test

To get a Georgia learner's permit, you pass a knowledge exam at a Department of Driver Services (DDS) center. It's really two short tests on a computer: 20 questions on road signs and 20 on road rules, and you need 15 right on each. You can take it at 15, with no appointment, and the fee is $10 a try. Georgia has no DMV for licenses. DDS runs the permit test and the road test.

  • 15/20Score needed on each test, so 75%

How it works

How the Georgia learner's permit test works: two tests, 15 of 20 on each

You need 15 of 20 right overall. You also need at least 6 of the 7 sign and signal questions right, whatever your total.
  1. The knowledge exam is two tests on a computer at a DDS Customer Service Center: Road Signs and Road Rules.
  2. Each test is 20 questions, and you need 15 right on each one. Passing one doesn't make up for failing the other.
  3. You don't need an appointment for the knowledge exam. Start it at least 30 minutes before the center closes.
  4. DDS lists 26 languages for the test, including Spanish, Korean, Vietnamese, Chinese and Arabic. Its license FAQ says the signs test is English only, so ask the center if you need another language.
  5. If you have a reading disability, you can ask for an oral test. Times vary by center.
  6. You pay the $10 permit fee before the test. If you fail, you pay $10 again for the next try.
  7. After a first fail you wait 1 day to retest. After a second fail, you wait 7 days.

Topics

What’s on the test

01

Signs, signals and pavement markings

Section 7 of the Drivers' Manual covers every sign, light and line on the 20-question Road Signs test. Shape and color tell you most of what a sign means before you can read it.

Key points (4)
  • An octagon always means stop, a triangle means yield, and a pentagon marks a school zone or crossing.
  • A round sign means a railroad crossing is ahead.
  • A flashing red light is treated like a stop sign. A flashing yellow light means slow down and take care.
  • Georgia law allows the shared center turn lane to be used only for left turns.
02

The learner's permit, Class D and TADRA rules

Georgia licenses teens in three steps under the Teenage and Adult Driver Responsibility Act (TADRA): the Class CP permit at 15, the Class D provisional license at 16 and the full Class C license at 18.

Key points (4)
  • You can get a learner's permit at 15. The supervisor must be 21 or older, hold a Class C license and sit beside you.
  • You must hold the permit for one year and one day before a Class D license.
  • Class D drivers may not drive from midnight to 5 a.m., with no exceptions.
  • First six months on Class D: family passengers only. Then one non-family passenger under 21, then three after a year.
03

School buses, cyclists and sharing the road

Section 9 of the manual covers when you must stop for a school bus and how to share the road with people on bikes, on foot and on motorcycles.

Key points (4)
  • On a two-lane road, a four-lane road with no median, or a road with a center turn lane, traffic in both directions stops for a school bus.
  • On a divided highway of four or more lanes with a median, only traffic behind the bus must stop.
  • Leave at least 3 feet when passing a bicyclist.
  • Stop and stay stopped for a pedestrian in a crosswalk on your half of the road or within one lane of it.
04

Speed limits and headlights

Georgia has default speed limits for each kind of road, a $200 Super Speeder fee and clear rules on when headlights go on and when to dim them.

Key points (4)
  • Default limits: 30 mph urban or residential, 35 unpaved county road, 55 other areas, 65 urban interstate, 70 rural interstate.
  • The Super Speeder fee of $200 applies at 75 mph or more on a two-lane road, or 85 mph or more on any road.
  • Headlights go on from half an hour after sunset to half an hour before sunrise, and any time it's raining.
  • Dim high beams within 500 feet of an oncoming car and within 200 feet of one you're following.
05

Alcohol and the hands-free law

The manual covers Georgia's alcohol limits, implied consent, seat belts and the hands-free law, which bans holding a phone while you drive.

Key points (4)
  • Under 21, you're considered under the influence at 0.02. At 21 and older, it's 0.08.
  • Refusing a state chemical test suspends your license for at least one year.
  • You may not hold or support a phone while driving. A first conviction is 1 point and up to $50.
  • Everyone under 18 in a passenger vehicle must wear a seat belt, and children under 8 need a proper child restraint.
06

Parking and railroad crossings

The manual gives exact distances for where you may not park and where to stop at a railroad crossing. These numbers come up often on the Road Rules test.

Key points (4)
  • No parking within 15 feet of a fire hydrant, 20 feet of a crosswalk at an intersection, or 30 feet of a stop sign, yield sign or traffic signal.
  • No parking within 50 feet of a railroad crossing.
  • At a crossing with flashing lights or lowered gates, stop within 50 feet but no closer than 15 feet from the nearest rail.
  • Never pass another vehicle on a railroad crossing.

Road signs

Georgia road signs to know for the signs test

Road signs are half of Georgia's knowledge exam, with their own 20 questions and their own pass mark of 15. Learn the shapes first: in the Drivers' Manual an octagon always means stop, a pentagon means school and a round sign means a railroad crossing.

  • Red octagon with white border and the word STOP in whiteStop: the only eight-sided sign
  • Downward-pointing red triangle with white center and the word YIELD in redYield: slow down and give way
  • Fluorescent yellow-green pentagon with two children walkingSchool zone or crossing: five sides

20 practice questions from the Georgia Drivers' Manual

These 20 questions are written from the Georgia DDS Drivers' Manual: 7 on signs and signals and 13 on the rules Georgia tests most, like TADRA and school buses. The real exam is two tests of 20, and you need 15 right on each. Here you need 15 of 20 overall and at least 6 of the 7 sign questions, close to the real rule of 15 on each test. After each answer, the tutor can explain it another way or tell you why the other choices are wrong.

FAQ

Common questions

How many questions are on the Georgia learner's permit test?

40, split into two tests of 20. The Road Signs test asks what standard signs mean, and the Road Rules test covers traffic laws and safe driving. You need at least 15 right on each one. A high score on one doesn't make up for a fail on the other.

Is the Georgia permit test given by the DMV?

No. People call it the Georgia DMV permit test, but licenses, permits and the tests are handled by the Department of Driver Services, or DDS. Vehicle tags and registration belong to a different agency, the Georgia Department of Revenue.

Can I take the Georgia permit test online?

No. The knowledge exam is taken in person at a DDS Customer Service Center. What you can do online is fill in the License/ID/Permit Form before you go and take the free DDS practice test.

What happens if I fail the Georgia DDS permit test?

You pay the $10 fee again and come back. After a first fail you wait 1 day. After a second fail, you wait 7 days. There's no appointment to book for the knowledge exam, so you can walk in once the wait is over.

What do I need to bring for a Georgia learner's permit?

One proof of identity, such as a certified U.S. birth certificate or passport, two proofs of your Georgia address, and your Social Security number on the online form. Under 18, you also need proof of school enrollment and a parent, guardian or responsible adult to sign.

Is there a free Georgia DMV practice test?

Yes. DDS has a free online practice test with road signs and road rules questions. The 20 questions on this page are free too, with an explanation for every answer. DDS doesn't offer a practice test for the CDL.

All 20 practice questions with answersA printable list of the practice test above
  1. Downward-pointing red triangle with white center and the word YIELD in red

What does this sign tell you to do?

Slow down and give the right-of-way to traffic in the intersection The Georgia Drivers' Manual says triangle signs mean yield. You slow down, let vehicles already in the intersection or on the crossing road go first, and stop if you need to.

  2. Fluorescent yellow-green pentagon with two children walking

What does a sign with this five-sided shape mean?

You're near a school zone or school crossing The manual says the pentagon shape marks a school zone or a school crossing. Slow down and watch for children, and obey the school speed limit when its lights are flashing.

  3. Round yellow sign with a black X and two letters R

You see this round yellow sign on a country road. What is ahead?

A railroad crossing The manual says a round sign means a railroad crossing is ahead. Slow down, look and listen for a train, and be ready to stop.

  4. Traffic signal with the red light lit and flash marks around it

You come to an intersection where this signal is flashing. What must you do?

Stop completely, then go when it's safe, as you would at a stop sign The manual says a flashing red light means you must stop completely and treat it as you would a stop sign. Once you've stopped and the way is clear, you may go.

  5. Four-section left-turn signal with the flashing yellow arrow lit

You want to turn left and this signal is showing. What does it allow?

A left turn after you yield to oncoming traffic and pedestrians The manual says a flashing yellow arrow means you may turn left after yielding to oncoming traffic and pedestrians. Oncoming cars may have a green light, so the turn isn't protected.

  6. Orange diamond with a black flagger symbol holding a flag

What does the orange color of this sign tell you?

You're entering a work zone The manual says work zone warning signs have an orange background with black letters or symbols. This one warns of a flagger ahead, and you must obey the flagger's directions.

  7. Center lane bordered by solid yellow outer lines and broken yellow inner lines, with opposing left-turn arrows

What may you use the middle lane marked like this for?

Making left turns only This center lane is bordered by solid and broken yellow lines on each side. The manual says Georgia law prohibits using it for any purpose other than making a left turn.

  8. How old must you be to apply for a Class CP learner's permit in Georgia?

15 The Georgia Department of Driver Services says you must be at least 15 to apply for a learner's permit. You also pass a vision exam and the knowledge exam.

  9. Who may supervise you while you drive with a Georgia learner's permit?

A licensed driver 21 or older with a Class C license, sitting beside you DDS says a permit holder may drive only with a supervisor who is at least 21, holds a Class C license, is fit to take control of the car and sits beside the driver.

  10. For the first six months with a Class D provisional license, who may ride with you?

Only members of your immediate family Under Georgia's TADRA rules, only immediate family may ride with a Class D driver in the first six months. In the second six months, one passenger under 21 who isn't family is allowed. After that, up to three.

  11. When may a Class D provisional license holder not drive at all?

Between midnight and 5 a.m., with no exceptions The manual says a Class D holder may not drive between 12:00 midnight and 5:00 a.m., and the rule has no exceptions.

  12. You're driving on a four-lane divided highway with a median. A school bus stopped on the other side has its red lights flashing. What must you do?

You don't have to stop, but watch for children The manual says that on a divided highway of four or more lanes with a median, only traffic following the bus must stop. Oncoming traffic on the other side of the median keeps going, carefully.

  13. What is the least space Georgia law lets you leave when passing a bicycle?

3 feet The manual says the minimum legal space to pass a bicyclist is 3 feet. If you can't change lanes, slow to at least 10 mph under the limit or 25 mph, whichever is more.

  14. If no sign says otherwise, what is the speed limit in a Georgia urban or residential district?

30 mph The manual lists 30 mph as the limit in urban or residential districts unless a sign says otherwise. The other defaults are 35 on unpaved county roads, 55 in other areas, 65 on urban interstates and 70 on rural interstates.

  15. When does Georgia law require you to use your headlights?

From half an hour after sunset to half an hour before sunrise, and any time it's raining The manual says to use headlights from one-half hour after sunset to one-half hour before sunrise, at any time it is raining, and whenever visibility is limited.

  16. An oncoming car is getting close at night and you have your high beams on. Within what distance must you dim them?

500 feet The manual says to dim your lights within 500 feet of an approaching vehicle. Dim them within 200 feet when you're following another vehicle.

  17. A driver under 21 is considered under the influence in Georgia at what blood alcohol level?

0.02 or more The manual says a person under 21 is irrefutably considered under the influence of alcohol at 0.02 or more. For drivers 21 and older, the level is 0.08.

  18. What does Georgia's hands-free law forbid while you drive?

Holding or supporting a phone with any part of your body The manual explains that under the hands-free law (HB 673), drivers may not hold or support a wireless device, and may not write, send or read texts. A first conviction is 1 point and a fine of up to $50.

  19. How close to a fire hydrant may you park in Georgia?

No closer than 15 feet The manual says you may not park within 15 feet of a fire hydrant. Other limits include 20 feet from a crosswalk at an intersection and 50 feet from a railroad crossing.

  20. A railroad crossing's lights are flashing. Where must you stop?

Within 50 feet but no closer than 15 feet from the nearest rail The manual says to stop within 50 feet, but not less than 15 feet, from the nearest rail when the signal is flashing, the gates are down, a flagger signals or a stop sign is posted.
