What is the Louisiana driving age for each license?
| Age | What you can get |
|---|---|
| 14 | A TIP, for driving with your driver ed instructor only |
| 15 | A learner’s permit |
| 16 | An intermediate license, after 180 days on the permit |
| 17 | A full Class E license, or a Class D chauffeur’s license |
| 18 | A CDL for driving within Louisiana |
| 21 | A CDL for driving between states, and a hazmat endorsement |
Driver ed has its own floor. You can start the classroom part no sooner than 90 days before your 15th birthday, and only if you’re at least in eighth grade. Nobody under 15 may do the behind-the-wheel part.
Starting at 17 or older
At 17 you can skip the permit and intermediate stages: you take driver ed, then the knowledge, vision and road skills tests, for a full license. From 18 you can take the 14-hour pre-licensing course instead of the 38-hour one, and choose a learner’s permit or a full license.
Moving to Louisiana at 16
If you’re 16 and move from another state, you can go straight to an intermediate license. You need proof of a driver ed course like Louisiana’s and proof that you held a learner’s license there for at least 180 days, unless you turned 17 first.
