Drivers ed classes in Louisiana

Every first-time driver in Louisiana takes driver ed, whatever their age. Under 18, it’s 30 hours in class and 8 hours behind the wheel. Drivers ed classes in Louisiana are taught by schools the OMV licenses and by some high schools, and each school sets its own price.

Which drivers ed classes do you need in Louisiana?

At 18 or older you can take the full 38-hour course instead. You can’t drive more than 4 hours of the behind-the-wheel part in one day. The classroom part can start up to 90 days before your 15th birthday if you’re at least in eighth grade, and you need your TIP before the first drive. H-2A farm workers with a valid foreign license don’t need driver ed, but still take both tests. The OMV’s DouxWe tool asks a few questions and tells you whether you need the course.

Can you take drivers ed online?

Partly, and only at 18 or older. A licensed school may teach some or all of the 6 classroom hours of the pre-licensing course online if the state approved its method. None of the 30 classroom hours for drivers under 18 can be taught online, and the 8 hours behind the wheel are always in a car with an instructor.

Choosing a school

The OMV lists every licensed school by town, and a separate list of schools that teach in Spanish, French, German, Arabic or Vietnamese. It suggests visiting the school, asking how the 8 driving hours are spent and talking to former students. Don’t sign the Certificate of Completion before the course is finished, and don’t let your teen initial the driving log on the TIP in advance. Complaints go to the OMV’s Training and Certification Unit at ladrivingschools@dps.la.gov.
