Can you renew a Louisiana driver’s license online?
Only if the OMV sends you a renewal invitation. You can then renew on Express Lane, in the LA Wallet app or by mail. You can’t renew online or by mail if:
- You’re 70 or older, unless a medical disability keeps you from coming in
- You renewed by mail or online last time
- Your license has been expired 12 months or more, or it’s lost
- Your address has changed, or anything else on the card needs changing
- Your record shows a suspension or another flag
Online you pay by Visa, Mastercard, American Express or Discover. If you don’t already have a REAL ID, an online renewal gets you a card marked “Not for Federal Identification”, so go in person if you want a REAL ID. The new license can take up to 30 days to arrive by mail.
Renewing at an OMV office
Bring your ID, proof of your Louisiana address and proof of insurance for any vehicle you own. You pass a vision test, and you can change your license class or restrictions while you’re there. The OMV takes renewals by appointment, and walk-ins as time permits.
If your license is lost or stolen
At 18 or older, you can order a duplicate on Express Lane or in LA Wallet with your license number or the last four digits of your Social Security number. It goes to the address on your record. If it hasn’t come after 30 days, visit an office within 60 days of applying for a free replacement.
Under 18, you get a duplicate at an office, with a parent or guardian to sign. If your license expires within 90 days, the OMV treats the visit as a renewal instead.
Changing your address or name
Louisiana law gives you 10 days after a move to update your license, and you do it in person. For a name change, update your record with the Social Security Administration first, then bring the original document that shows the change, such as a certified marriage certificate or court order. Both count as a duplicate license, and the expiration date stays the same.
Renewing while you’re out of state
Students at school out of state and military members or their dependents can apply by mail for a reconstructed license on form DPSMV 2013, paying by money order, cashier’s check or certified check. It doesn’t work for a first REAL ID, a suspended license or one that’s been expired 12 months or more.
