Louisiana CDL practice test, manual and permit steps

The OMV doesn’t publish a Louisiana CDL practice test, so you study from its free CDL Manual. Each CDL knowledge test needs 80%, and you can take them in English, French or Spanish on the OMV’s test system, but not with an interpreter. Passing gets you a commercial learner’s permit (CLP), the first step to a Class A, B or C license.

  • 14 daysOn the CLP before the skills test

How do you study without an official Louisiana CDL practice test?

Read the CDL Manual sections for the license class and endorsements you want, starting with general knowledge, then air brakes if your truck has them. You can take the CDL knowledge tests in any order. Apps and websites sell CDL practice tests too, but their questions aren’t the OMV’s.

Getting your commercial learner’s permit

  • Be 18 or older, and 21 to drive between states or haul hazardous materials
  • Hold a valid Louisiana Class A, B, C, D or E license
  • Be medically certified by an examiner on the national registry
  • Fill in the CDL Supplemental Form (DPSMV 2211)
  • Pass the knowledge tests and show proof of your Louisiana address

From September 15, 2026, medical examiners send your medical certificate to the federal system, so you no longer hand a copy to the OMV for your CDL. A CDL holder with the right class sits beside you whenever you drive on the CLP.

From the CLP to the skills test

The CLP lasts up to 180 days, and you can extend it once for another 180 for free. You wait at least 14 days after getting it before the skills test, and you may need federal entry-level driver training (ELDT) first. Only approved third-party testers give CDL skills tests, and they’re in English, without interpreters. You must finish all tests within a year of getting the CLP, or your scores expire.
