Who needs a Class D license?
You need one to drive a single vehicle used in commerce with a gross vehicle weight rating from 10,001 to 26,000 pounds, or a combination of vehicles in that range used in commerce. It also covers vehicles that carry passengers for hire, except taxis (a Class E license is enough for a taxi), unless they fall into a CDL class. It doesn’t cover placarded hazardous materials. A Class D license lets you drive everything a Class E license does.
What’s on the chauffeur license test in Louisiana?
The OMV tells you to study Chapter 10 of the Driver’s Guide. It covers vehicle size limits, securing loads, speed and following distance for trucks, railroad stops, required equipment and air brakes, and Chapter 10-A covers trailer safety. Some of its numbers:
- Most vehicles can be no more than 8 feet wide and 13 feet 6 inches high.
- A load sticking out 4 feet or more past the bed needs a 12-inch red flag by day and a red light at night.
- On rural highways, trucks stay at least 400 feet apart except to pass.
- When towing another vehicle, the speed limit is 45 mph.
Changing from Class E to Class D
- Bring your license, proof of your address and proof of insurance on any vehicle you own to an OMV office.
- Pass the vision test and the Class D knowledge test.
- Pay the Class D fee. Time left on your Class E license counts toward it.
Under 18, you need a parent’s consent. If you’ve never held a Class E license, you also take a road skills test. You don’t retest if the OMV can confirm you held a chauffeur’s license or CDL before.
