Louisiana driver’s license cost, and the other OMV fees

A Class E license is $32.25 for six years, and the Temporary Instructional Permit you get before driver ed costs the same. When you finish the course, the OMV swaps your TIP for a learner’s permit or license at no extra charge. On top of the Louisiana driver’s license cost, the office you visit may add a local fee of up to $8.

Each license fee is the state license fee plus a $12 handling charge: $20.25 plus $12 for a Class E license. A renewal costs the same as a new license, and drivers 70 or older pay no late fee. A duplicate for a 4-year license is $13. Renewing online adds a service charge for electronic payment. Moving a teen from the permit to an intermediate license, and from that to a full license, costs the duplicate fee. The fee table in the Driver’s Guide is older than OMV policy 2.00, so go by the amounts on this page.

The local fee, set by your parish or city

Some OMV offices also collect a fee for the local government, which sets it to help pay for that office. Under Act 948 of 2026, from August 1, 2026, it can be up to $8 per transaction, except at Shreveport’s offices, which the new law leaves out. You pay the fee of the office where you do the transaction, not the one where you live. OMV policy 36.01 lists each office’s fee, from $3 at offices such as Monroe and Chalmette to $8 at Crowley and West Monroe, and $4.50 in Shreveport.

Test, course and other fees

The OMV’s fee policy has no separate fee for the knowledge test, and a road skills test at an OMV office is free. A third-party tester, such as a driving school, sets its own road test fee, and each school sets its driver ed price. Offices take cash, debit or credit cards and personal checks.

Class D chauffeur and CDL fees are on their own pages. An official driving record costs $18 online or $16 by mail.
