The intermediate license in Louisiana

At 16 you can move up from a learner’s permit and drive alone, with two limits. Until you turn 17, you can’t drive from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. without a licensed adult or older sibling, and from 6 p.m. you can carry only one passenger under 21 from outside your family. The intermediate license in Louisiana carries restriction code 61.

What are the intermediate license rules in Louisiana?

  • Under 17, you can’t drive from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. unless a licensed parent or guardian, a licensed adult 21 or older, or a licensed sibling 18 or older is with you.
  • From 6 p.m. to 5 a.m., you can carry no more than one passenger under 21 who isn’t in your immediate family, unless a licensed parent, guardian or adult 21 or older is with you.
  • Everyone in the car must be buckled up before you move.

These rules come from R.S. 32:407. The OMV’s student page sums the passenger rule up as one sibling passenger from 6 to 11 p.m., but the law is the one above, and it counts any passenger under 21 from outside your family.

How to get it

  • Be at least 16 and have held your learner’s permit for 180 days
  • Have a parent or guardian sign a statement that you’ve driven 50 hours with a licensed parent, guardian or adult 21 or older, 15 of them at night
  • Pass the road skills test with 80 points or more
  • Pass the vision test, with a custodial parent there to sign

The parent also signs that you’ve had no at-fault crash and no convictions for moving violations, seat belt or curfew violations, or drug or alcohol offenses while on the permit.

Moving on to a full license

OMV policy says the intermediate restrictions come off at 17. State law also asks for 12 months on the intermediate license with no at-fault crash and no moving, seat belt, curfew, drug or alcohol convictions before full privileges, so a clean record matters too. If your license is suspended or a court puts you on probation for a driving offense, the OMV may extend the intermediate stage by 30 to 180 days. After a suspension, you retake a driver ed or pre-licensing course before the license is reinstated.
