How long is the SAT test, and how many questions are on it?

2 hours and 14 minutes, plus a 10-minute break between the two sections. That’s how long the SAT test is from the first question to the last. In that time you answer 98 questions: 54 in Reading and Writing, in 64 minutes, then 44 in Math, in 70 minutes. Check-in and setup come on top, so plan for a longer morning.

Each module has 2 pretest questions that College Board is trying out for future tests. They don’t count toward your score. So 25 Reading and Writing questions and 20 Math questions per module are scored. You can’t tell which ones are pretest, so treat every question as if it counts.

How much time do you get per question?

In Reading and Writing you get about 1 minute 11 seconds per question. In Math it’s about 1 minute 35 seconds. Those are College Board’s own averages: 1.19 and 1.59 minutes.

Bluebook shows a countdown for each module and warns you when 5 minutes are left. You can hide the clock, but not in those last 5 minutes. You can also mark a question for review and come back to it, as long as you’re still in the same module.

The second module adapts to you

Each section starts with a module that has a mix of easy, medium and hard questions. How you do on it decides whether your second module is harder or easier on average.

Your section score is based on all the questions in both modules. You can still reach the benchmark scores whichever second module you get.

How long the whole test day takes

The 2 hours 14 minutes is testing time only. Before it you check in, sit down with your device and hear the instructions, so the day runs longer. College Board doesn’t give a total, but it does say your device needs enough charge for roughly three hours.

If you borrow a device from College Board, arrive 30 minutes early to pick it up and set it up. Students approved for extended time get longer.
