SAT prep courses, apps and books: where to study

Some of the best SAT prep is free and official, so look there before you pay for SAT prep courses. College Board’s Bluebook app has full-length adaptive practice tests that give you a score, and Khan Academy has free SAT courses. Schoolhouse.world runs free online tutoring groups. Paid options add video lessons, extra questions and study plans. In our list they start at $99 for a month of practice questions, and live classes cost $895 or more. We checked prices and what’s free in October 2026.

Do you need paid SAT prep courses?

Not to get started. The free official tools cover the whole test. Bluebook has full practice tests, the Student Question Bank lets you drill one skill at a time, and Khan Academy’s Digital SAT courses have videos, articles and worked examples.

What paid SAT prep courses mostly add is structure, a teacher you can ask, or more practice questions. Those questions are written by the company, not College Board, so check that a course is built for the digital SAT before you pay.

How to choose, depending on your situation

Start from what you’re short of:

  • Short on time: take one Bluebook practice test, then spend your hours on the question sets My Practice picks for you. A course that starts from the beginning will waste weeks.
  • Weak in one section: filter the Student Question Bank to that section’s domains and skills, and use Khan Academy’s course for that section only.
  • Want a live teacher: Schoolhouse.world’s free SAT Bootcamps run for four weeks online, in groups of usually 5 to 10, led by peer tutors who scored in the 95th percentile or above on their section. Paid live classes in our list start at $895.
  • A $0 budget: everything in the study path below is free.

A free study path using College Board’s own tools

Work through it in this order:

  1. Take a full-length practice test in Bluebook to see where you stand.
  2. Open My Practice to see your score and how you did in each content domain, then choose Practice Specific Questions for a set from the question bank chosen for your level.
  3. Use Khan Academy’s Digital SAT courses for the domains where you lost the most points.
  4. Take a second full-length practice test and compare the two scores.
