The SAT calculator policy for test day

You don’t have to bring a calculator to the SAT: Bluebook has a Desmos calculator built in for the whole Math section. On test day, the SAT calculator policy also lets you bring your own graphing or scientific calculator, as long as it doesn’t have a computer algebra system (CAS). College Board doesn’t publish a list of approved models, only the ones that aren’t allowed.

What does the SAT test calculator policy allow?

  • The Desmos calculator in Bluebook. You can switch between scientific and graphing at any point in the Math section.
  • Graphing calculators without CAS features.
  • Scientific calculators.
  • Four-function calculators. These are allowed, but College Board doesn’t recommend them because most don’t follow the order of operations.

Which calculators aren’t allowed on the SAT?

Any calculator with a built-in computer algebra system is banned. College Board names these models: Casio ClassPad and Algebra fx 2.0, HP Prime and HP 48GII, TI-Nspire CAS and CX II CAS, TI-89 and TI-92. A TI-Nspire without “CAS” in its name is fine.

  • Calculators with a QWERTY keyboard, a pen or stylus input, or a paper tape
  • Anything with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or cellular connection, a camera, or audio or video recording
  • Calculator apps on phones
  • Laptops and tablets as calculators, unless it’s an approved accommodation
  • Symbolic algebra apps, menus or programs

Calculator rules on test day

Using a calculator to share information during the test can get you dismissed and your scores canceled.

  • Bring a calculator that works, with fresh batteries, and a backup if you can. If yours fails and you have no spare, you keep going with the Desmos calculator.
  • Battery-powered handhelds only. You can’t plug a calculator in.
  • Delete any algebra programs and stored documents before the test.
  • Keep it under your desk during Reading and Writing, and keep its cover under your desk the whole time.
  • Turn the sound off, and don’t share it with anyone.
  • If your calculator has large characters or a raised display, staff may seat you somewhere else.

Should you bring your own calculator?

Only if you’re faster on it. The Desmos calculator is in every Bluebook practice test, so you can try it under real conditions first. If you do bring a handheld, check its model against the banned list well before test day.
