What happened to the SAT Subject Tests?

You can’t take an SAT Subject Test anymore. College Board stopped offering them in the US in January 2021, and the last sittings anywhere were in May and June 2021. So there’s no Math Level 2, chemistry or US History Subject Test to sign up for. To show what you know in a subject now, College Board points to AP exams.

What College Board changed in 2021

College Board announced on January 19, 2021 that it would no longer offer Subject Tests in the US. Registrations were canceled and refunded. Students outside the US got two last chances, in May and June 2021.

College Board said AP, which far more students can take now, had made the Subject Tests unnecessary. The optional SAT Essay was dropped at the same time.

If you already have Subject Test scores

They still exist and you can still send them, the same way you send SAT scores. Whether a college looks at them is up to the college, so check its admissions page.

What can you take instead of an SAT Subject Test?

For a single subject, College Board suggests AP courses and exams. The regular SAT covers algebra, advanced math, geometry and trigonometry, but it gives one Math score, not a subject-test score.
