How the Bluebook SAT works
- You test on your own laptop or tablet, or one you borrow from College Board. You can’t test on a phone.
- You connect to the test center’s Wi-Fi to start and to submit your answers. If the connection drops in between, you keep working and lose nothing.
- Bluebook has a timer, a built-in Desmos calculator, a formula sheet for Math, a highlighter and a tool to cross out answer choices.
- Bluebook tells you when to take your break, so people in the same room may finish at slightly different times.
- You can mark a question to come back to, see which ones you skipped, use a line reader, and highlight or add notes on Reading and Writing passages.
Free online practice with a score
- Download Bluebook from bluebook.collegeboard.org and sign in with your College Board account. You don’t need to be registered for a test.
- Go to Practice and Prepare and choose Full-Length Practice. It’s timed and adaptive, like the real test.
- When you finish, open My Practice at mypractice.collegeboard.org to see your score, every question, the right answers and explanations.
The SAT question bank
College Board’s Student Question Bank has thousands of official practice questions, written by the people who write the SAT. You build your own sets by section, content domain, skill and difficulty, so you can drill only Advanced Math, or only hard Words in Context questions.
It’s free. Sign in to My Practice with your College Board account and open the question bank. After a Bluebook practice test, My Practice can also pick a set of questions from the bank aimed at your weak spots.
More free practice online
- Khan Academy has free Digital SAT Math and Reading and Writing courses with videos, articles and worked examples.
- College Board’s Question of the Day app gives you one official question a day.
- The test preview in Bluebook lets you try a few questions and all the tools. It isn’t scored.
Should you practice in Bluebook before the SAT?
A practice test in Bluebook also checks that your laptop or tablet works with the app. Do this well before test day. Paper practice tests exist too, but College Board recommends them only for students who will test on paper because of approved accommodations.
