SAT prep books: the official study guide and free PDFs

The only SAT prep book from College Board itself is The Official SAT Study Guide, sold in bookstores and the College Board store. You don’t have to buy it, though. The free 2026-27 SAT Weekend Student Guide explains the whole test, and College Board has free practice test PDFs with answer explanations. For most students, the free adaptive practice tests in Bluebook are the best place to start.

The free student guide

The 2026-27 SAT Weekend Student Guide is a free PDF. It covers how the test is built, every content domain and how many questions it has, what to bring, how scoring works and how to send scores. Read it once before you start studying.

Free practice test PDFs with answers

College Board has eight full-length paper practice tests, numbered 4 to 11. Each one comes with a scoring guide and answer explanations, free to download.

There’s a catch. The PDFs aren’t adaptive and they’re longer than the real test, so College Board recommends them only for students approved to test on paper. Everyone else should take at least one adaptive practice test in Bluebook.

Is the official SAT prep book worth buying?

This is College Board’s printed guide, with official practice tests and tips on using them. It’s useful if you like working on paper or want to build stamina with printed tests. In October 2026 the College Board store listed it at $34.99. You can also add it when you register for the SAT.

Every practice test in it is official, but the tests in Bluebook are free and adaptive. So the book is a nice extra, not a must.

Free study material that isn’t a book

  • Khan Academy: free Digital SAT Math and Reading and Writing courses, with videos and worked examples.
  • Student Question Bank: thousands of official questions you can filter by skill and difficulty.
  • Schoolhouse.world: free four-week online SAT bootcamps in small groups, led by trained peer tutors.

Other SAT prep books

Princeton Review, Kaplan, Barron’s and others publish SAT prep books. Their practice questions are written by those companies, not by College Board, so the style and difficulty can differ from the real test. Check that any book you buy is for the digital SAT.
