The PE exam in Florida

You can take the Florida PE exam without applying to the board first and without any engineering experience. The Florida Board of Professional Engineers (FBPE) says you register directly with NCEES, though you must pass the FE before the PE. Experience counts later, when you apply for the license.

What does Florida require besides the PE exam?

  • An ABET-accredited bachelor’s in engineering or engineering technology, or one evaluated as substantially equivalent.
  • Pass the FE and the PE.
  • 48 months of experience with an engineering BS, or 72 months with an engineering technology BS.
  • Score 90% or more on the board’s Laws and Rules Study Guide, on Chapter 471, Florida Statutes and Division 61G15 of the Florida Administrative Code.

How Florida counts experience

Full-time work in your last two undergraduate years counts at half time, up to 12 months. A master’s or doctorate can count for up to 12 months. FBPE also notes that NCEES figures show first-time takers with four years of experience are more likely to pass.
