The PE exam in Washington

Since July 2026 you don’t need the board’s approval to take the Washington PE exam: you register straight with NCEES. The Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors (BRPELS) calls this decoupling. You apply to the board only after passing and meeting every licensing requirement, including experience.

What does Washington require besides the PE exam?

  • 8 years of progressive engineering experience under a licensed PE, verified by that PE. Approved education counts toward it: an ABET engineering bachelor’s as four years, an ETAC technology degree as three, and other degrees at the board’s discretion.
  • Pass the FE (a waiver can be requested) and the PE.
  • Pass the Washington Engineer Law Review, with 80% to pass.

Structural engineers in Washington

Washington licenses structural engineers separately. Its July 2026 notice says candidates enroll with NCEES directly for the SE exam too, but its exam page still lists SE application deadlines of January 15 for April and July 31 for October. Ask the board which applies before you plan.
