How PE exam registration works

Everything happens in your MyNCEES account, where you register and pay NCEES for the PE or the FE. PE exam registration isn’t booking, though: you can schedule a seat only after your licensing board approves you and NCEES emails that you’re ready to schedule. Some boards want their own application first.

How does PE exam registration work, step by step?

  1. Read your licensing board’s rules. Eligibility is the board’s call, and some boards want an application and fee before you register.
  2. Create a MyNCEES account. Your first and last names must be in English and match the government ID you’ll show at the test center. You can have only one account.
  3. Choose “Register for an exam”, follow the steps and pay NCEES online.
  4. Ask for accommodations or a military exception now, during registration. Accommodation requests go to Pearson, and you can’t schedule until they’re decided.
  5. Wait for the “NCEES Exam Ready to Schedule” email, then book your seat.

PE exam registration deadlines

NCEES’s Examinee Guide sets no registration deadline for the year-round exams. You can book as late as one business day before you test, and once your board approves you, you have 12 months to take the exam.

Some boards set their own filing dates. Maryland, for example, asks first-time PE applicants to file 120 days before the exam date. Washington still lists PE Structural application deadlines of January 15 for April and July 31 for October.

Changing your exam or board

To change discipline or licensing board, cancel your registration and register again. NCEES refunds the fee minus a $50 administrative fee. All NCEES exams are in English only.
