What does Texas require for the PE exam and license?
- A degree: an EAC/ABET engineering bachelor’s, a TAC/ABET engineering technology bachelor’s, or a board-approved combination of a science bachelor’s and a graduate engineering degree.
- Experience: at least 4 years with an accredited engineering degree, 8 years with a non-accredited degree, earned before you apply.
- The FE and PE exams, or waivers.
- The Texas Ethics of Engineering exam, open book, usually sent with the application.
- Three references from licensed PEs, or five if you ask for an exam waiver.
Applying and getting approved
- Check your education, pass the FE (or request a waiver) and check your experience, in that order. The board says not to anticipate experience.
- Submit the application with the ethics exam, transcripts and references.
- Wait for administrative and then technical review. The board puts the average at about two months.
- If approved, register and pay with NCEES. You aren’t registered automatically.
Applications with too little experience are turned down with no refund.
Texas EITs and retakes
If you’re a Texas EIT, you may register for the PE before you have 4 years of experience. EIT status is optional and lasts eight years. Once approved, you can attempt the PE as often as you need, within NCEES’s limits.
Texas board fees
| Fee | Amount |
|---|---|
| PE license application | $75 |
| EIT registration | $15 |
These go to TBPELS, on top of NCEES’s exam fees.
