Five areas carry 14‑21 questions each, from systems engineering to quality engineering. NCEES’s industrial engineering PE exam, Industrial and Systems, has 85 questions in 8.5 hours, costs $400 and runs on one day a year; this year’s exam was held on October 28, 2026.

Industrial engineering PE exam topics

  • Systems engineering (14‑21): analysis and design tools, requirements analysis, modeling such as simulation and queuing, bottleneck and value analysis, project management.
  • Facilities engineering and planning (14‑21): process flow, layout design, space and capacity analysis, site selection, unit loads and material handling.
  • Operations engineering (14‑21): forecasting, production planning and scheduling, engineering economics, costing, inventory, distribution, warehousing and transportation.
  • Work design (14‑21): methods analysis, line balancing, work measurement and sampling, learning curves, safety codes, human limits and workplace design.
