The MN DMV is DVS: online services, MyDVS and contacts

Minnesota has no DMV. Driver’s licenses, permits, tests and vehicle tabs are handled by Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS), a division of the Department of Public Safety (DPS), so the MN DMV website is DVS’s site on dps.mn.gov, which drive.mn.gov also opens. Its online services let you book tests, pre-apply and track your card. The permit test itself isn’t taken online.

  • 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.DVS office hours, weekdays
  • 4Languages for DVS’s online virtual assistant
  • MyDVSAccount for your record and license status

Is the MN DMV the same as DVS?

Yes, in practice. DPS is the state department, and DVS is the division that issues licenses, permits, ID cards and vehicle registration. The manual sends you to drive.mn.gov for online services and a virtual assistant in English, Spanish, Somali and Hmong. For a license, permit, test or tabs, DVS is the agency to deal with.

What you can do online

  • Schedule or reschedule a Class D written test or road test.
  • Fill in the pre-application for a permit, license or ID, and upload REAL ID documents to pre-verify them.
  • Track a license or ID card in the mail, and check whether a license is valid.
  • Renew your vehicle tabs.
  • With a MyDVS account: request your certified driving record, view your license status and send DVS a message.

Can you take the Minnesota permit test online?

Not from home. Minnesota Statutes 171.13 has DVS run a web-based knowledge test, but only approved driver education programs and other approved proctors can give it, on their computers and with a proctor on site. Otherwise you take it at a DVS exam station. Both are on the locations page.

What still needs a visit

  • Your first permit and license, with the written, vision and road tests.
  • License renewal, unless you qualify to renew by mail while you’re temporarily out of state.
  • Any REAL ID application.
  • A duplicate for a lost, stolen or damaged card.
