You can apply for a Minnesota ID card at any office that takes driver’s license applications. A state ID in MN comes as a standard card, a REAL ID or an enhanced ID, and you can hold only one type. Under 65, a new card is $35.50, and a standard ID issued at 65 or older doesn’t expire.

Which state ID in MN do you need?

  • Standard: open to anyone who meets the document rules, whatever their immigration status. From 18, it isn’t enough on its own for a domestic flight.
  • REAL ID: accepted for domestic flights, military bases and federal buildings. It needs more documents.
  • Enhanced: for U.S. citizens only, with its own document list. The extra fee is in the table below.

How long an ID card lasts

  • Under 21: until your 21st birthday. Renew no more than 60 days before it.
  • From 21 to 64: four years.
  • 65 and older: a standard ID has no expiration date, a REAL ID lasts eight years and an enhanced ID four.
  • You can renew up to nine months early without losing time.

An ID card and a driver’s license

DVS won’t issue an ID card to someone who already has a valid driver’s license or instruction permit, unless you sign a downgrade statement giving up your driving privileges.

Replacing a lost ID

A lost, stolen or damaged ID is replaced with a duplicate at an office that handles duplicates or renewals, and it keeps the same expiration date. DVS’s fee table doesn’t list a separate duplicate ID fee, so ask at the office.
