Online drivers ed in Nevada, and the 50-hour log

The DMV says most first-time drivers under 18 must finish a DMV-approved driver education course before they get a license. You can take it in a classroom, for 30 hours, or as online drivers ed with a Nevada DMV-approved school. Either way, you also log 50 hours of supervised driving, 10 of them at night.

Who needs it

Driver education is for first-time drivers under 18, before a full license. You don’t need it for the permit. You can enroll from 15 and a half, and you finish the course after you pass the written test. Home-schooled students aren’t exempt.

The three ways to meet the rule

OptionCourseDriving hours
Classroom30 hours at a DMV-approved school50, with 10 at night
OnlineAn approved online course50, with 10 at night
No courseOnly with no school within 30 miles and no way to take a course online100, with 10 at night

The handbook allows the 100-hour option only if you’re more than 30 miles from a school and can’t get online. The DMV’s driver education page says so too, but further down it also allows it if you don’t wish to take an online course. Ask the DMV before you skip a course.

How do you choose online drivers ed in Nevada?

The DMV licenses driving schools but doesn’t regulate their prices or schedules. Its list of schools for training drivers shows each school’s license number and whether it offers under-18, online or behind-the-wheel training, so check that the course fits your age and confirm the license number with the DMV before you pay.

Online schools on the list include DriversEd.com, Aceable, iDriveSafely and Safe2Drive, alongside schools based in Las Vegas, Reno, Sparks, Henderson and Carson City.

Logging the hours

  • Log on the RoadReady app or on the paper Beginning Driver Experience Log (DLD-130). The DMV doesn’t accept any other log.
  • Even if you use the app, a parent or guardian signs the first page of the DLD-130.
  • Time with a professional driving instructor counts toward your hours.
  • You hand in the log at your road test.

The DMV’s guide for parents, The Parent’s Supervised Driving Program, goes with the RoadReady app.
