UCAT Situational Judgement Test (SJT)

Hypothetical clinical scenarios, each with up to six questions: 69 in 26 minutes, after a 1 minute 30 second instruction section. You don't need medical or procedural knowledge for situational judgement in the UCAT. In the UK the result is a band, kept separate from your total out of 2700.

How is situational judgement scored in the UCAT?

The Consortium says the SJT measures your capacity to understand real-world situations and to identify critical factors and appropriate behaviour in dealing with them. You get full marks when your answer matches the correct one and partial marks when it's close. In the UK the result is then reported as one of four bands; UCAT ANZ gives a 300 to 900 score instead, with a 2026 average of 580.

A scenario on patient confidentiality

From our own practice set: Ade, a medical student on placement, is asked by a patient's relative how the patient is doing. He knows, but isn't sure the patient has agreed to this relative being told. How important is it for Ade to consider the patient's wishes about sharing their information?

Very important. The patient's wishes decide who hears about their care, so Ade shouldn't share anything until he knows they agree, and he can ask a senior colleague. Three free SJT question banks on the UCAT website follow the same format.

Does the SJT count?

Yes, at a growing number of universities. The Consortium says an increasing number use the SJT in selection, and some exclude lower-performing candidates. Check how each of your universities treats the bands.
