The UCAT score for medicine and dentistry

There isn't one number. Each university decides what UCAT score for medicine or dentistry it wants, and not all of them set a minimum. Some use a threshold, which they publish on their own websites, some weight the score with your grades, and some only look at it in close cases. As of October 2026, 51 UK universities and 7 partner universities abroad use the UCAT, and universities in Australia and New Zealand use UCAT ANZ.

How do universities use your UCAT score for medicine?

  • A threshold: a minimum score to be considered further. A fixed threshold is published on the university's website. Others set it each year and usually show the scores they used before.
  • Weighting: the UCAT is combined with things like GCSE results, and its weight can be large or small.
  • Borderline cases: for some, the score only matters when applicants are otherwise close.
  • Total or subtests: most look at the total score, and some look at subtest scores too.
  • The SJT: an increasing number use it, and some exclude lower-performing candidates.

The Consortium's advice is to read each university's information carefully and contact it if anything is unclear.

Is there a UCAT cut-off score?

Not a general one. Cut-offs belong to individual universities and change from year to year, so a figure from one medical school tells you nothing about another. Check each university's UCAT page, which the Consortium links to from its How Universities Use the UCAT page. The same Consortium page also points to entry requirement summaries from the Medical Schools Council and the Dental Schools Council.

Some applicants to a few courses have alternative requirements, so check the course itself. The Consortium's advice is to check every course's entry requirements before you book a test.
