It’s four subtests, language arts and reading, social science, science and mathematics, and you need to pass all four. Each subtest is scored and paid for on its own, so you can take them together or one at a time. On January 1, 2027, the Language Arts and Reading subtest moves to revised competencies.

Retakes and the PK-3 test

If you pass three subtests and miss one, you retake only the one you missed. Prekindergarten/Primary PK-3 (053) works the same way: four subtests (Developmental Knowledge, Language Arts and Reading, Mathematics, Science), about 180 questions in all, the same $37.50 per subtest, and its Language Arts and Reading subtest changes in 2027 too. Unlike K-6, calculators aren’t allowed on PK-3.

Teachers who already hold an Exceptional Student Education K-12 certificate and add Elementary Education K-6 can have their first-attempt fees waived.
