The free FTCE study guide for your test

Every test has one, free, on the FTCE/FELE program website: a test information guide written under the authority of the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE). It’s the only FTCE study guide the FLDOE recommends, and it says it doesn’t endorse any third-party materials. Each guide covers one test of the Florida Teacher Certification Examinations (FTCE) or the Florida Educational Leadership Examination (FELE) and sets out what the test covers, how much each part counts, sample questions and a bibliography of textbooks.

What’s in an FTCE study guide from the FLDOE?

  • Test design: the format, number of questions, time and passing score
  • Competencies and skills, with the approximate percentage of questions for each competency
  • Preparation strategies and a suggested course of study
  • Sample questions in each question format, and for essay tests the scoring rubric
  • A reference sheet, where the test provides one, such as the General Knowledge (GK) math reference sheet
  • An annotated bibliography of textbooks and other resources by competency

The guides are web pages, each with a print button. The FLDOE says they give an overview of a test’s content and format but aren’t a complete source of content and don’t replace college coursework.

Using the guide to plan your study

  1. Read the competencies and skills for your test, and note the percentage for each competency.
  2. Fill in the program’s competencies and skills worksheet for your test to see which ones your past courses covered.
  3. Study the competencies you haven’t covered, giving the most time to the heaviest ones.
  4. Work through the sample questions and, for an essay test, compare your writing with the rubric.
  5. Use the bibliography for any competency where you need a textbook.

Guides that change for January 2027

From January 1, 2027, the competencies come from the 29th Edition of Competencies and Skills Required for Teacher Certification in Florida. The State Board of Education says this revises five tests: Deaf or Hard of Hearing K-12, the Language Arts and Reading subtests of Elementary Education K-6 and Prekindergarten/Primary PK-3, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) K-12 and School Counseling PK-12. If you’re taking one of those in 2027, make sure you’re reading the guide for the new competencies.
