FTCE test prep: where to study

Begin with the free test information guide for your test, because it’s the only Florida Teacher Certification Examinations (FTCE) material the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) recommends. Each guide lists the competencies, how much of the test each one covers and some sample questions. FTCE test prep from companies adds more practice questions, but the FLDOE says it doesn’t endorse any third-party materials and can’t vouch for their accuracy.

Which FTCE test prep do you need?

It depends on which tests the Bureau of Educator Certification has told you to take, and how long ago you studied the content. Work through it in this order:

  1. Open the test information guide for each test you’re taking and read its competencies and blueprint percentages.
  2. Use the program’s competencies and skills worksheet to map them against courses you’ve already taken.
  3. Try the guide’s sample questions, then spend most of your time on the competencies with the biggest share of the test.
  4. If you need more practice, choose a course or book that matches your exact test name and code, such as Mathematics 6‑12 (026).

Classes and tutoring through Florida colleges

The FTCE/FELE program points students at Florida colleges and universities to their academic advisor for coursework. If you aren’t enrolled, it suggests an Educator Preparation Institute (EPI), and the FLDOE says various EPIs offer courses to prepare for the FTCE, though they may not cover your subject. State law also says that a school district that employs a teacher who hasn’t passed a General Knowledge subtest must tell them about state and district support, including test information guides, district resources and preparation courses at state universities and Florida College System institutions.

Studying again after a failed test

If you don’t pass, your score report shows how many multiple-choice questions you got right in each competency. Use it to choose what to study before your retake, and check the bibliography at the end of your test information guide for textbooks on those competencies.
