FTCE subject area exams (SAE)

There are 39 of them, one for each subject and grade range a Florida certificate can cover, and you take the ones that match what you’ll teach. The FTCE subject area exams (Subject Area Examinations, or SAE) are part of the Florida Teacher Certification Examinations (FTCE). All are computer-based, a test with a single part costs $150, and multiple-choice parts need a scaled score of 200 to pass. On January 1, 2027, five of them change their competencies.

What changes on January 1, 2027

Rule 6A-4.0021 switches every FTCE test to the 29th Edition of Competencies and Skills Required for Teacher Certification in Florida on January 1, 2027. The 28th Edition applies until December 31, 2026. In its notice, the State Board of Education says the 29th Edition revises the competencies and skills for these five tests:

  • Deaf or Hard of Hearing K-12
  • Elementary Education K-6, Subtest 1: Language Arts and Reading
  • English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) K-12
  • Prekindergarten/Primary PK-3, Subtest 2: Language Arts and Reading
  • School Counseling PK-12

If you’ll test after that date, check that your test information guide is the version for 2027. Two guides changed earlier: Educational Media Specialist PK-12 and Health K-12 got new guides for testing from July 1, 2026.

Formats that differ from the usual test

  • Elementary Education K-6 and PK-3 have four subtests each, at $37.50 a subtest, and you can split them over several appointments.
  • English 6‑12 and Middle Grades English 5‑9 have a multiple-choice section and an essay section, at $75 each.
  • Spanish K-12 adds an essay and five speaking tasks with a headset. French K-12 has speaking, listening and an essay, and German K-12 has listening, an essay and an oral interview. All three are given only at selected test centers.
  • Music K-12 has a listening part, and Deaf or Hard of Hearing K-12 includes video, with their own tutorials.
