The FELE exam: Florida Educational Leadership Examination

It’s the test for school administrators, not classroom teachers. The FELE exam (Florida Educational Leadership Examination) is required for Educational Leadership certification and runs through the same program and account as the Florida Teacher Certification Examinations (FTCE). The New Generation FELE replaced the older three-subtest version in January 2026. It has four subtests, two multiple-choice and two written, and you must pass all four.

Each subtest is timed separately, and once you move on you can’t go back. Take three or more in one sitting and you get a 15-minute break after the second. Subtest 1 covers school law, resources, operations and data-driven decisions; Subtest 2 covers student achievement, instruction and building a strong faculty.

Passing the FELE

  • Subtests 1 and 2: a scaled score of at least 200
  • Subtest 3: at least 4 of 8 points
  • Subtest 4: at least 5 of 8 points

Two scorers rate each written response from 1 to 4, so the total runs from 2 to 8. These passing scores were set by linking early-2026 results to the previous FELE, and the program says they apply during a transition period for the New Generation FELE. The FELE’s written assessments are reported on the later performance score date.

Fees, registration and retakes

Each subtest costs $53.75, and first attempts and retakes cost the same. You register in your FTCE/FELE account and can take any combination of subtests in one session. If you fail a subtest you retake only that one. If you took the Previous Generation FELE before January 2026 and passed only one or two of its three subtests, you must take and pass the whole New Generation FELE.
