The FTCE Professional Education Test (PEd)

It’s one multiple-choice test of about 80 questions on how to teach, with 2 hours 30 minutes to answer them. The FTCE Professional Education Test (PEd, test code 083) is the Florida Teacher Certification Examinations (FTCE) check of professional preparation, from planning lessons and assessment to Florida’s Principles of Professional Conduct. You need a scaled score of 200 to pass, and the fee is $150.

Passing and timing

There’s no scheduled break. If you leave the room, your 2 hours 30 minutes keeps running. Rule 6A-4.0021 has set the PEd’s passing score at a scaled score of 200 since March 1, 2014, which matched 85 right answers on the test form used to set it. Because forms are equated, the number of right answers you need can vary a little.

On-site score reports for multiple-choice tests like this one are typically given right after testing, and the official report is in your account within four weeks.

Who doesn’t need the PEd?

Section 1012.56(6) of the Florida Statutes gives several ways to show professional preparation. Some include the PEd, such as finishing a Florida or out-of-state teacher preparation program and passing it. Others don’t:

  • A valid professional standard teaching certificate from another state
  • A valid National Board for Professional Teaching Standards certificate
  • Finishing a school district’s professional education competence program, with professional preparation courses and three years rated effective or highly effective on a temporary certificate
  • Finishing a state-approved professional learning certification program

Until June 30, 2029, someone who completes a professional learning certification program or an educator preparation institute and is rated highly effective doesn’t need to pass the PEd for a professional certificate. From July 1, 2029, a 2025 law (ch. 2025‑107) replaces that exemption: the PEd is no longer required of candidates who complete a teacher preparation program that meets the core curriculum rules in s. 1012.551.
