What’s on FTCE Math 6-12 and Middle Grades Math 5-9?
| Competency | 6-12 | 5-9 |
|---|---|---|
| Number sense, operations, proportionality | 8% | 15% |
| Algebra | 19% | 30% |
| Geometry (and trigonometry on 6‑12) | 28% | 20% |
| Data analysis, statistics, probability | 19% | 15% |
| Precalculus and calculus | 16% | Not on test |
| Student reasoning and instruction | 10% | 20% |
The big difference: Math 6‑12 adds precalculus and calculus and weights geometry and trigonometry most, while Math 5‑9 spends almost a third of its questions on algebra and a fifth on how students reason.
Calculator and test rules
Both tests give you an on-screen scientific calculator, added in October 2023, and you can’t bring your own. A hand-held calculator may be available if you ask. Neither provides a reference sheet, so you need to know your formulas. There’s no scheduled break, and the clock runs if you step out.
What’s the FTCE Math 6-12 passing score?
A scaled score of 200, the same as every multiple-choice FTCE test. New standards for both math tests took effect on January 1, 2025, and the rule ties 200 to a raw score set on the standard-setting forms. Because test forms are equated, the number you need on your form can vary a little.
