Georgia CDL practice test and permit

DDS doesn't publish a Georgia CDL practice test. The commercial knowledge exams come from the Georgia Commercial Driver's Manual, a free PDF, so that's what to practice from. You take those exams to get a commercial learner's permit (CLP), which you must hold for 14 days before the CDL skills test. The car permit questions on our practice page won't prepare you for them.

Is there an official Georgia CDL practice test?

No. DDS's practice test page says it doesn't offer one for the CDL and suggests looking for other practice tests online. Whatever you use, check it against the Commercial Driver's Manual, because that's where the questions come from. If you're adding endorsements, you may need to pass extra knowledge exams for those too.

Getting a commercial learner's permit

  • Be at least 18 and hold a valid regular Georgia driver's license.
  • Under 21, your CDL is limited to driving in Georgia only. You can have that removed at a center from your 21st birthday.
  • Certify your driving category, and bring a medical card if your category needs one.
  • Be able to read and understand English.
  • Start the knowledge exams at least 45 minutes before the center closes. The CLP page says to call ahead to schedule.

Georgia CDL fees

Fees are as of October 2026. A new $35 fee is due after a fourth failed attempt, or if 360 days pass between attempts. Veterans and school bus drivers can ask for a fee waiver.

FeeAmount
CLP permit fee, paid before the knowledge exams$10, paid again after a fail
CDL application (CAP) fee$35, good for 4 test attempts
CDL road skills test$50 per attempt
CDL license, 8 years$32, plus $5 per endorsement added later

From permit to CDL

Your CLP is valid for 365 days, and you must hold it for 14 days before the skills test. First-time Class A or B drivers, and anyone adding a school bus, passenger or hazmat endorsement, must finish federal Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) first.

CDL road tests are given at Albany, Between, Brunswick, Cumming (no Class A), Dalton, Douglasville, Forsyth, Gainesville, Milledgeville, Rome and Thomson. Bring a paper CDL vehicle inspection checklist, and give 72 hours' notice to change the appointment or you lose the $50.
