Georgia permit test study guide: the DDS Drivers' Manual

It's the DDS Drivers' Manual. Every question on the knowledge exam comes from it, which makes it the only Georgia permit test study guide you really need, and DDS gives it away free on its website and in the DDS 2 GO app. You don't need to buy a book. Read Sections 5, 6 and 7 first.

What's the best Georgia permit test study guide?

The manual itself. DDS says everything you need to pass is in the Drivers' Manual, and it doesn't publish a separate study guide for the car permit. The manual reads like a long web page, so you can search it on your phone for a topic you keep getting wrong.

DDS notes the manual explains the law in everyday language and isn't a legal reference. For the test, that's exactly what you want.

What's in the Drivers' Manual

  • Sections 1-4: license classes, getting a permit or license, testing, and other DDS services.
  • Section 5: traffic laws, from turning and parking to speed limits, the Super Speeder law, work zones, DUI and the hands-free law.
  • Section 6: teen driving laws under TADRA, including Class D passenger limits and the midnight curfew.
  • Section 7: signs, signals and markings. This is the whole Road Signs test.
  • Sections 8-9: safe driving in fog, rain and skids, expressways, and sharing the road with buses, bikes, people on foot and trucks.
  • Sections 10-11: losing your license, points, and what to do after a crash.

Which sections to study first

Start with Section 7. The signs test is a full half of the exam, and shapes and colors are quick to learn. Then do Section 5, which is where most numbers on the Road Rules test come from: 15 feet from a hydrant, 500 feet to dim your lights, 30 mph in a residential area. Finish with Section 6, since Georgia likes to ask about TADRA.

NumberWhat it's for
15 of 20Score needed on each of the two tests
0.02Blood alcohol level that counts as under the influence under 21
3 feetLeast space when passing a bicycle
15-50 feetWhere to stop from the nearest rail at a railroad crossing
Midnight-5 a.m.Class D curfew, no exceptions

Other DDS guides

The Parent/Teen Driving Guide is a 40-hour lesson plan for parents teaching a teen to drive, and it can count toward Joshua's Law. The CDL and motorcycle tests have their own manuals. DDS also sells printed manuals in bulk to schools and groups.

Be careful with look-alike sites. The manual warns about private 'DMV' sites ending in .com or .org. Official DDS pages end in .gov.
