How do you get your permit in Georgia, step by step?
- Submit the online License/ID/Permit Form. It stays on file for 60 days.
- Gather your documents: one proof of identity, two proofs of Georgia address, and your Social Security number on the form.
- If you're under 18, add proof of school enrollment and bring a parent, guardian, responsible adult or authorized driving instructor to sign.
- Go to a Customer Service Center at least 30 minutes before it closes. No appointment is needed.
- Pay the $10 permit fee, pass the vision exam, and pass both the Road Signs and Road Rules tests with 15 of 20 each.
- Have your photo taken.
Georgia learner's permit requirements under 18
- Proof of school enrollment: the notarized Certificate of School Enrollment form, a transcript, a recent progress or grade report, or a current school ID. Home-schooled teens use a Department of Education certificate or their filed Declaration of Intent.
- An adult to sign: a parent, legal guardian, responsible adult or authorized driver training instructor. A responsible adult must show proof of the relationship.
- The adult who signs can ask DDS to revoke your license at any time before you turn 18.
Driving with your permit
With a Class CP permit you may drive only with a supervisor who is at least 21, holds a Class C license, is fit to take control of the car and sits in the seat beside you. The permit lasts 2 years, as of October 2026.
Keep track of the date you got it. You need to hold it for 1 year and 1 day before you can get a Class D license at 16. Your driver's education course and your 40 hours of supervised driving, 6 at night, are done during that time, while you hold the permit.
Vision and photo
The vision exam is done at the center with a machine. You need at least 20/60 in one eye, with or without glasses or contacts, and a field of vision of 140 degrees. If you fail the field-of-vision part, an eye doctor can fill in the DDS vision report form for you.
