Georgia suspended license: why, and how to get it back

A Georgia suspended license usually follows 15 or more points in 24 months, a DUI, driving without insurance, a missed court date or unpaid child support. Teens can lose a license for much less. To get it back, you meet the conditions of your suspension and pay a reinstatement fee to DDS, which ranges from $25 to $410 depending on the reason.

Why does a Georgia license get suspended?

Under 21, reckless or aggressive driving, passing a stopped school bus or speeding 24 mph or more over the limit also suspend your license. Under 18, so do four points in 12 months.

  • 15 or more points in any 24-month period.
  • A DUI, or refusing a state chemical test, which suspends your license for at least a year.
  • Driving without insurance, or not showing proof of it.
  • Failure to appear in court, or not paying child support.
  • Not paying the $200 Super Speeder fee, for driving 75 mph or more on a two-lane road or 85 mph or more anywhere.
  • Hit and run, fleeing police or homicide by vehicle.

Georgia points for common tickets

Speeding less than 15 mph over the limit adds no points. A DDS-certified defensive driving course can take off up to 7 points, once every 5 years.

Checking your status and driving in the meantime

Check your license status, points and reinstatement steps in DDS Online Services, or call (678) 413-8400 on weekdays. In some cases DDS can issue a limited driving permit during a suspension, for a fee, which lets you drive only to set places for set reasons.
