Georgia driver's education and where to study

Georgia driver's education is required if you want a Class D license at 16 or 17. Joshua's Law asks for a 30-hour course from a DDS-certified school, in a classroom or online, plus behind-the-wheel training. For the permit test itself you don't need a course at all: the free DDS Drivers' Manual and practice test cover everything on it.

Do you need Georgia driver's education?

Only for a Class D license at 16 or 17. Since July 1, 2021, 17-year-olds follow the same rules as 16-year-olds. Joshua's Law doesn't apply to the learner's permit, so you can take the knowledge exam at 15 without any course.

If you're 18 or older, Joshua's Law doesn't apply. You still sign an affidavit at the road test saying you've done 40 hours of supervised driving, 6 of them at night.

Four ways to meet Joshua's Law

DDS says classroom courses generally start around $250, and online programs cost less. You need a learner's permit before any behind-the-wheel training. There's no official driving log, but a parent or guardian comes to the license application and confirms the training was done.

How to choose a driver training school

Use only a school on the DDS certified list. DDS warns that classes from uncertified schools aren't accepted for licensing. If money is tight, look at the Georgia Driver's Education Grant Scholarship Program, run by the Governor's Office of Highway Safety.

The parent-taught route costs the least, but it only works if a parent has the time for 40 structured hours. A school's 6 hours behind the wheel suits teens whose parents can supervise practice but would rather not teach from scratch. Online courses fit around school. Classroom courses suit teens who learn better with a teacher in the room.

Don't forget ADAP

Under 18, you also need the Alcohol and Drug Awareness Program certificate for a Class D license. Many teens get it through high school. If yours doesn't offer it, or you're home-schooled, eADAP is free online.

The official study path for the permit test

  1. Read the DDS Drivers' Manual, starting with Section 7 on signs and Section 5 on traffic laws.
  2. Read Section 6 on teen driving laws. TADRA questions are common.
  3. Take the free DDS practice test, then our 20 questions, and reread the parts you missed.
  4. Walk in to a DDS center for the knowledge exam. No appointment is needed.
  5. Once you have your permit, start your driver's education and your 40 hours of practice.
